(Via the Caucus) Related to yesterday's post, here's a bit from the latest NY Times/CBS News opinion poll ( PDF): Some people say lifting the federal tax on gasoline for the summer months is a good idea because it would lower the cost of gas and reduce expenses faced by average Americans. Other say removing the gas tax for the summer months is a bad idea because it would not create real benefits for average Americans and does not deal with the real problem of America’s dependence on foreign oil. What do you think - is removing the federal tax on gasoline for the summer months a good idea or a bad idea?

- Bad idea: Overall 49%; DPV: 52%; RPV: 50%
- Don't Know or No Answer: Overall: 5%; DPV: 4%; RPV: 2%
Do you think some candidates have proposed eliminating the gas tax this summer MAINLY because they think it is a sound proposal that will provide some relief to average Americans or MAINLY to help themselves politically?

- Help themselves: Overall: 70%; DPV: 72%; RPV: 73%
- Both: Overall: 5%; DPV: 5%; RPV: 2%

N = 671 Registered Voters = 601 Democratic Primary Voters = 283 Republican Primary Voters = 148 So come on, Clinton and McCain, you're not fooling anybody. Particularly annoying to me was this quote from Clinton (whom I generally like): “I’m not going to put in my lot with economists,” [Mrs. Clinton] said on the ABC program “This Week.” A few moments later, she added, “Elite opinion is always on the side of doing things that really disadvantages the vast majority of Americans.” Yeah, why listen to the people trained in the subject? That would be like going to the emergency room if you break your leg, or insisting on only flying in planes with actual trained pilots. Why bother with the services of those elitist doctors, pilots or economists when you can just ask the next person who wanders along on the street to set your broken leg, fly you to California or forecast economic repercussions of an idiotic political move?
